The intersection of design, building science, and craft

Our Story
Our story starts with a simple idea: build things right and treat people and the planet well. That approach has carried us through years of carpentry, renovation, and homebuilding, and it still shapes how we work today. One of the nicest things we hear from clients is that they miss having us around when the project is over. That means a lot to us.
We are a small, experienced team rooted in Portland, Maine. With decades of experience, a close-knit team, and trusted trade partners we’ve built relationships with over the years, we try to make the process feel as good as the finished work.
Our Approach
We care about what you see…and what you don’t
01 Design with Place
We begin with the home, the site, and the way people actually live in it
02 Building Science
We pay close attention to the parts behind the walls — air, water, insulation, durability, and long-term performance.
03 Sustainability
Guided by Pretty Good House principles, we focus on practical, durable choices that improve comfort and performance without overcomplicating the building.
04 Thoughtful Craft
From structure to finish work, we care about precision, material choices, and details that are made to last.
05 Clear Communication
We keep clients, designers, and trade partners informed so decisions stay collaborative and the process stays clear.
Frequently Asked Questions
A few of the questions we hear most often from clients early on. If you don’t see yours here, reach out! We’re always happy to talk through a project.
-
We work on renovations, additions, new homes, aging in place, and select commercial or community projects.. We’re especially interested in projects where the client cares not just about how the finished space looks, but how it performs and holds up over time.
-
We’re proudly based in Portland, Maine, and most of our work is in southern Maine and the surrounding area. Depending on the project, scope, and schedule, we may travel farther. If you’re unsure whether your project is within our range, it’s always worth reaching out!
-
Most projects begin with a conversation about the home, the goals, the budget, and what you’re hoping to accomplish. If it feels like a good fit, the next step is usually a site visit so we can understand the existing conditions and the project in person.
-
We try to talk about money early and openly rather than waiting until the design is too far along. A Rough Order of Magnitude gives everyone an early range to work from and helps test whether the scope and budget are moving in the same direction. As the project develops, pricing becomes more detailed with better drawings, clearer selections, and input from trade partners.
-
No. Some clients come to us with a full design team already in place, while others are just starting to figure things out. We’re happy to join the conversation at either stage.
-
Clear communication is a big part of how we work. You should have a good sense of what’s happening on site, what decisions are coming up, and when something changes. Construction always involves questions and occasional surprises, but our job is to work through those issues, communicate them clearly, and keep the project moving without making you feel like you have to manage it yourself.
-
We’re a small, hands-on team with decades of experience and a close network of trusted trade partners. We take on projects both large and small, and because we stay intentionally hands-on, each one gets personal attention from our team. Some of our favorite feedback is when clients tell us they actually miss having the crew around after the project is finished.
